THE ITALIAN SITUATION
According to the Smart Mobility Report 2022 edited by the Energy & Strategy Group of the Politecnico di Milano, 88 thousand charging devices were activated in domestic dress in Italy in 2021, a figure that marks a 250% growth over the previous year.
As for public charging, at the end of 2021 in Italy instead the total estimate is 26,860 charging points, +75% over the previous year. As of July 2022 there are about 250 fast (between 50 and 150 kw) and ultrafast (with power above 150 kw) charging points on the national territory, mostly located on the highway network between Liguria and Lombardia with more than 40 charging points, then Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna with 30 charging points, followed by the other regions with a gap of more than 20 charging points.
But there is still a long way to go, according to the European Commission, which is calling for more ambitious targets regarding the Fit for 55 decarbonization plan, there is an urgent need for faster deployment of charging points across Europe. In particular, according to a recent proposal for a negotiating mandate issued by the European Parliament, at least one charging point will be needed every 60 km by 2026.
