The energy and digital transition requires a change in the modus operandi of grids in Italy and Europe. Although it is important to invest in renewing and expanding electricity grids in light of increased electrification, using the flexibility of connected consumers is crucial. In Europe by 2030, up to 30 billion/year could be saved if the flexibility of consumers connected to distribution grids were enabled, and about 600 million would be savings in balancing markets if demand resources could participate without the current restrictions. This requires establishing Local Flexibility Markets, opening Ancillary Services and Balancing Markets to consumers and aggregators, and horizontal and vertical cooperation among system operators.
The objectives of this conference are:
- to outline a comparative European view of this evolution, for the benefit of both network operators and consumers;
- to highlight the criticisms in the current Italian context; and to
- present success stories in Europe of cooperation between market operators representing the “Flexibility Demand Management Industry” and network operators.
