In recent years, there has been increased interest from Italian and European institutions in the development of technologies related to hydrogen production, storage, and transportation.
In particular, in 2019, the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (INECP) was published in Italy, which included hydrogen in all dimensions and in particular the use of green hydrogen amounting to at least 1% of the FER target for transport.
Subsequently, in 2021 with the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) 3.64 billion was dedicated to hydrogen having the goal of:
- develop flagship projects for the use of hydrogen in hard-to-abate industrial sectors, starting with steelmaking;
- foster the creation of "hydrogen valleys," particularly leveraging areas with brownfield sites;
- refueling stations for road and rail transport;
- support R&D;
- reforms and regulations necessary to enable the use, transport and distribution of hydrogen.
It is in this scenario that K.EY, in collaboration with H2IT, ENEA and all the main institutions involved, promotes the development of projects and actions for the integration of hydrogen production and storage technologies with renewable energy sources in order to improve energy and economic efficiency, while assessing their environmental costs.
Green hydrogen, produced through processes with no or very low CO2 emissions, represents one of the main turning points for the energy transition of the industrial production sector and in transportation.
THE EUROPEAN SITUATION
- currently only about 1% of global hydrogen production is green, from about 300 MW of electrolyzer capacity;
- by 2024, electrolyzer capacity is expected to reach 6 GW and then 10.9 GW by 2026;
- new projects have been announced with a capacity of 120 GW to 2030 and beyond.
